One person has died after a crash at a level crossing.

British Transport Police (BTP) said it was called to Dimmocks Cote level crossing on the A1123 at Stretham, between Waterbeach and Ely, Cambridgeshire, at about 10:15 GMT on Tuesday after reports of a collision involving a train and a car.

"Officers responded alongside paramedics and sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene," said a BTP spokesperson.

National Rail said all lines between Waterbeach and Ely were closed and no trains were running between Cambridge North and Ely.

"Major disruption is expected until approximately 16:00," a National Rail spokesperson added.

The train involved was operated by CrossCountry, which said it had been working with emergency services and Network Rail to "manage the situation safely and support those onboard".

It advised passengers to check their journeys before travelling.

BTP said another person had been receiving treatment for minor injuries. It has appealed for witnesses.

Travel provider Inrix said buses were replacing CrossCountry, Great Northern and Greater Anglia trains.
