Messages are being broadcast on 1026AM and 1116AM to inform listeners of the closure

The medium wave transmission of BBC Radio Guernsey and BBC Radio Jersey is set to be turned off in March.

Both will continue to be available on FM, DAB and BBC Sounds.

The BBC closed many local radio medium wave transmitters in 2018 with another round of closures in 2021. In addition to the Jersey and Guernsey transmitters, it has also announced plans to close the 5 Live Bexhill Medium Wave transmitter, though listeners will be able to tune to an alternative transmitter that also broadcasts 5 Live on medium wave.

It said these closures were "expected to be relatively low impact".

Messages are already being broadcast in the Channel Islands, on the medium wave frequencies, ahead of the closure on 31 March.

The BBC said the decision was due to declining listener numbers on medium wave, a preference for the audio quality of other services and maintenance costs were high as the equipment had reached the end of its life.

It said for those listeners who listen to the States of Guernsey Assembly meetings on medium wave, it was currently committed to broadcasting this service on DAB.

The BBC said there were no plans to remove BBC Local Radio from FM, with no further plans for any other medium wave closures "at this stage" for local or 5 Live.

BBC Radio Jersey is available on 88.8 FM, digital radio as BBC Radio Jersey, Freeview channel 711, Freely channel 712 and online on BBC Sounds or via smart speaker.

BBC Radio Guernsey is available on 93.2 FM covering Guernsey and on 99.0 FM covering Alderney, digital radio as BBC Guernsey and BBC Guernsey Xtra, Freeview channel 721, Freely channel 709 and online on BBC Sounds or via smart speaker.
