Two police officers were taken to hospital after a crash involving a police car and a BMW.

Leicestershire Police said it happened on Abbey Park Road just before 06:00 GMT on Wednesday.

The officers were taken to hospital as a precaution and have since been discharged, the force added.

The driver of the BMW - a 38-year-old man - was arrested on suspicion of failing to provide a specimen breath sample and driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs.

The main road was closed to both traffic and pedestrians during morning rush hour following the crash.

The route - between the junctions of Belgrave Circle and the A6 Abbey Lane - reopened at about 09:00.
