People in Iran have been sharing their reaction to Supreme Leader Khamenei's death with BBC Persian. All names are pseudonyms for safety reasons.

"People feel anxious and elated all at once," says Sahar in Tehran. "With every explosion, some shout with joy from their windows... The celebrations began the very moment they heard the strikes."

Pouya in Pardis says it "feels as though the air itself has cleared since [Khamenei's] death - as if something unclean has been lifted from it".

People were "incredibly happy last night", says Amir in Tehran - who suggests the state is still trying to exert some level of control. "I think the timing of the announcement of Khamenei’s death on state television was deliberate... to prevent people from pouring into the streets to protest. They announced it just before the call to prayer in the early hours of the morning."

Sina in Karaj says people are concerned the oppression could return: "Their main concern is that the US might make a deal and the authorities begin oppressing people all over again." He is prepared to "take to the streets and protest" if required, as the US has encouraged the people of Iran to do.

But while many are celebrating, others gathered in Tehran to mourn Khamenei's death earlier today.

  2. US sinks Iranian warship, says Central Commandpublished at 15:40 GMT 1 March

An Iranian warship has been sunk by US forces, US Central Command says.

In a post on X, Centcom says US forces struck a Jamaran-class corvette during the start of Operation Epic Fury on Saturday.

"The ship is currently sinking to the bottom of the Gulf of Oman at a Chah Bahar pier," Centcom adds.

The Israeli military has published footage showing a strike on two buildings in northern Tehran that are affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The buildings house the headquarters of Basij, the paramilitary voluntarily forces of the IRGC, and Thar-Allah, the IRGC’s central command centre.

The video, which we’ve geolocated, shows multiple large explosions at the site followed by large dust clouds.

Another building at the Thar-Allah headquarters was targeted by the IDF last year during the 12-day war. At the time, the IDF published drone footage of the damaged structure, and satellite photos taken last month show that location has now been cleared.

A new satellite photo we’ve reviewed, taken earlier this morning, does not reveal the extent of the damage caused in this latest attack.

  4. US casualties raise stakes for Trumppublished at 15:27 GMT 1 March

In his speech announcing the start of Operation Epic Fury against Iran early on Saturday, Donald Trump clearly laid out the prospect that US service members may fall in the days and weeks ahead.

"That often happens in war," he added.

Now, US Central Command has confirmed that three US service members have been killed and five seriously wounded.

As far as wars go, these casualties are still light. Military experts I've spoken to said they believe that combat casualties were to be expected, alongside non-combat deaths from the inherent risks of moving massive amounts of personnel and materiel across the world.

But for Trump, each American casualty raises the stakes domestically - where he is keen to juxtapose quick, successful and relatively clean military actions with the drawn-out conflicts of the Global War on Terror, which saw a steady trickle of US casualties in the headlines.

In the coming days, we are likely to hear that case be repeatedly made by President Trump and other administration officials.

US Central Command (Centcom) says that the USS Abraham Lincoln has not been struck by Iranian missiles.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC) earlier said they had attacked the aircraft carrier with four ballistic missiles, according to Iranian state media.

"The missiles launched didn’t even come close," Centcom says, adding that the Lincoln continues to launch aircraft in support of its "relentless campaign to defend the American people by eliminating threats from the Iranian regime".

USS Abraham Lincoln is the fifth Nimitz-class aircraft carrier in the United States Navy. Lincoln includes the latest F-35 stealth jets, capable of evading enemy radar.

  6. IDF launches new wave of strikes targeting 'heart of Tehran'published at 15:11 GMT 1 March

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says it has launched another wave of strikes on Tehran.

The IDF says the attack is focusing on the "heart" of the Iranian capital. It follows a similar update from the IDF earlier this morning.

The force adds that "interception efforts continue at all times".

  7. Three US service members killed - Centcompublished at 15:02 GMT 1 March
    Breaking

Three US service members have been killed in action, the US Central Command (Centcom) says. They are the first known American fatalities since the US began striking Iran on Saturday.

Five others have been "seriously wounded", the US military says. The names of the three fallen service members will not be released until 24 hours after their families have been notified, Centcom adds.

In announcing the US operation against Iran, President Trump warned that "the lives of American heroes may be lost, and we may have casualties. That often happens in war".

An Iranian official says 153 people have died after a girls’ school in Minab was hit in yesterday's strikes, according to Iran's judiciary-affiliated Mizan News Agency.

Another Iranian official had previously said the school, located about 600m (1,968ft) from the base of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, had been "targeted by three missile attacks".

The BBC has verified clips of the aftermath, showing smoke rising from a building as crowds gather nearby and people can be heard screaming in panic.

But we have not been able to independently verify the death toll - international news organisations are often refused visas to Iran, which severely limits their ability to gather information there.

An Israel Defense Forces spokesperson says he is "not aware" of any operation in the area. "I've also seen Americans say that they are checking into the incident," he adds.

  9. UAE says Iranian drones attacked naval base, causing firepublished at 14:48 GMT 1 March

The UAE Ministry of Defence (MoD) says a team has dealt with an incident involving two Iranian drones targeting a warehouse at Al-Salam Naval Base in Abu Dhabi.

The attack caused a fire in two containers storing general materials, but there were no casualties, the ministry says.

The MoD strongly condemns what it calls "blatant aggression and a flagrant violation of national sovereignty and international law".

Iranian state media reported that at least two strikes hit a military base in Abu Dhabi, but did not say why the base was targeted.

Earlier, it said it has dealt with 167 missiles and 541 Iranian drones since the conflict began on Saturday.

The death toll from the Beit Shemesh strike has now risen to nine, according to a spokesperson from the Magen David Adom (MDA) medical emergency service.

Additional MDA teams are providing medical treatment and evacuating 28 injured to hospitals in Jerusalem and to Shamir Medical Center, including two in a serious condition, two in a moderate condition, and 24 in a "light" condition, the spokesperson says.

MDA paramedic Dror Eini adds: “We saw destroyed homes, flames and smoke rising from residential buildings, wrecked cars, and significant chaos at the scene.

"I saw three casualties lying on the ground with no signs of life and had to pronounce them dead at the scene.

"Later, additional MDA paramedics pronounced six more victims dead."

  11. New supreme leader may be selected in a day or two, Iranian FM sayspublished at 14:31 GMT 1 March

In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, external, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says that, following the death of Khamenei, a new supreme leader may be selected in "a day or two".

It comes after Tehran announced an interim leadership who Araghchi says "will act as in charge of the leadership before a new leader is elected".

He adds that Iran's strikes are "an act of self-defence and retaliation to the American aggression against us".

Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian just appeared on state TV in what appears to be a recorded video message.

He expresses his condolences over the death of Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and says that the interim leadership council has started its work.

According to Iranian state media, Pezeshkian is himself part of the three-man interim committee that has stepped in to avoid a vacuum while Iran's clerical body selects the next supreme leader. He's reported to be working with Mohseni Ejehei, the head of the judiciary, and Ayatollah Ali Reza Arafi.

Pezeshkian also says that country’s armed forces will “disappoint” the enemies, and they are currently “crushing enemy’s bases”.

Half an hour prior to his address the nation, he published a post on X where he said that the recent onslaught would "not disrupt the resolve of the government of the Islamic republic to carry out its duties and responsibilities".

He also said that the "sorrow" from the death of Iran's supreme leader would "remain in the minds of people" for a "long time".

Emergency and rescue services are here in Beit Shemesh, where an Iranian missile hit a residential neighbourhood, killing at least eight people, according to medical services.

Officials say a synagogue where people were sheltering was hit and collapsed. A search operation is under way for people feared to be under the rubble.

There are piles of broken concrete and twisted metal, and a huge crater which indicates the point of impact.

Cars that were parked nearby were completely destroyed.

This is the deadliest attack in Israel so far in this war.

According to the Israeli military, the early warning system alerting people of incoming missiles functioned as planned and was activated in this area.

The military said circumstances of the impact were under review.

I've been speaking to Ori Lazarovich, a paramedic from the Magen David Adom medical emergency service who is at the site of the Beit Shemesh missile attack, where eight people have been reported dead.

Lazarovich says he has been rescuing people from the rubble.

“When we got the alert we headed straight towards the fire and the smoke,” he says.

"We arrived at the scene with dozens of medics and we started extracting people of the rubble and treating casualties, as rockets were still flying overhead.”

    Several buildings were "completely demolished".

"We pronounced a few people dead at the scene," he says. "We saw very severe injuries, crush injuries, smoke inhalation and severe burns."

  17. One killed in Kuwait after Iranian strikes, local media reportspublished at 13:52 GMT 1 March

Kuwait's Ministry of Defence says its air force has intercepted and destroyed 97 ballistic missiles and 283 drones since Iran launched strikes on the country, according to the official Kuwait News Agency.

  18. Threats of retaliation causing anxiety in the USpublished at 13:42 GMT 1 March

    Helena Humphrey
    Reporting from Washington DC

The threats of retaliation traded between Washington and Tehran are creating a sense of anxiety here in the United States, especially after President Trump warned there could be American military casualties.

We have seen some scenes of celebration in cities like Los Angeles, home to a large Iranian diaspora. But beyond that, there is also confusion.

One way to gauge it is through what Americans are searching for online. People are asking questions including, why has the US launched strikes on Iran? Is the country now at war?

That matters politically. Trump’s MAGA base largely backed him on a promise not to engage in so-called forever wars and focus on domestic priorities instead. A new foreign confrontation was not what many of those voters expected.

If he can achieve what he frames as regime change, he will argue it demonstrates strength.

But for now there are significant question marks - about the strategy, about the risk of escalation, and about the fact these strikes did not receive congressional approval.

The death toll from a missile strike on Beit Shemesh in Israel has been revised to eight, a Zaka rescue services spokesman told the BBC.

Nearly two dozen others are suffering from injuries of different severity following the strike on the Israeli city west of Jerusalem.

In a post on X, the Israel Defense Forces accused Iran of directly firing missiles toward the city neighbourhood, "killing innocent civilians".
