Bournemouth extend unbeaten run to nine league matches after draw against Brentford

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola said he "cannot accept" the decision to not award his side a penalty during their goalless draw with Brentford at Vitality Stadium.

In-form Bournemouth missed a host of chances and twice hit the post as they extended their unbeaten run to nine Premier League games, but Iraola felt Marcus Tavernier was fouled as he stretched to reach a cross.

"There is a clear penalty. It is impossible not to [give]. I cannot accept it," Iraola told TNT Sports.

"It isn't acceptable. I am even more angry if they decide after watching the replays it isn't enough. I am much more angry."

The hosts missed several chances either side of half-time in the goalless draw as their winless Premier League run against the Bees was extended to eight games.

Bournemouth's best chance came early in the second half when Tavernier stretched to reach a low cross into the penalty area but saw his effort come back off the post.

Brentford defender Michael Kayode appeared to catch the calf of the Cherries midfielder as he prepared to meet the cross, but referee Craig Pawson was not interested.

Tavernier hit the woodwork again in the 77th minute as he looked to finish off a swift counter-attack from a tight angle.

Brentford were tame in the first half but showed more attacking intent after the break, with Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic showing sharp reflexes to keep out a header from Sepp van den Berg.

Bournemouth striker Evanilson finished past Caoimhin Kelleher in the 79th minute after dancing past two challenges, but the offside flag cut short his celebrations.

Cherries top scorer Eli Junior Kroupi came off the bench and looked certain to score a winner, but his first-time effort in the 93rd minute trickled agonisingly wide.

A division-high 13th draw of the season sees Bournemouth move up to ninth in the table on 40 points, while Brentford remain seventh with 44 points.

'Somehow we haven't won it' - Iraola on Bournemouth draw with Brentford

While going nine games unbeaten in the Premier League is an achievement not to be sniffed at, manager Andoni Iraola will see this as two points dropped rather than one point gained.

Bournemouth have now drawn their last three games, all against sides around them in the table. Just one win would have boosted their fading hopes of playing European football next season.

The home side had no problem creating opportunities – they had five big chances as defined by Opta and produced an expected goals (xG) rating of 1.99 – but the final touch was lacking.

After an uneventful opening 30 minutes, James Hill headed over from less than 10 yards out before Ryan Christie rounded Kelleher but ran out of pitch before he could finish.

Tavernier curled an effort wide before he forced Kelleher into a smart save with his legs with the game's first shot on target in first-half injury-time.

Bournemouth looked like they would get their reward in the final moments when Kroupi ran on to a cut-back, but a slight deflection denied him a ninth league goal of the season and summed up his side's evening.

Brentford analysis: Bees create little but show grit to continue away form

Clean sheet 'pleasing' for Brentford's Keith Andrews

Four days after scoring three goals in the opening 34 minutes of a remarkable 4-3 win over Burnley, Brentford were rather more pedestrian on the south coast.

Keith Andrew's side generated an xG rating of just 0.05 in the first half, their lowest in the first-half of a Premier League match this season.

Despite enjoying marginally the greater share of possession (51.9%) over 90 minutes, the Bees' attacking threat was limited to occasional counter-attacks.

It took until the 72nd minute for them to muster a shot on target, but Dango Ouattara's strike was straight at Petrovic.

Brentford pushed more in the closing stages, but Van den Berg's header from a free-kick was the closest they came to scoring.

But what Keith Andrew's side lacked in offensive spark, they made up for in commitment to hang in the match.

Having lost seven of their first eight away league games this season, they have taken 16 points from the last seven away games.

The remain four points above Bournemouth and within touching distance of the Europa League places.

What's next for these teams?

Having been knocked out of the FA Cup, Bournemouth's next game is away to struggling Burnley on Saturday, 14 March (15:00 GMT), in the Premier League.

Brentford face West Ham at London Stadium on Monday, 9 March (19:30 GMT) for a place in the sixth round of the FA Cup.
