Third-bottom West Ham spurned the chance to put pressure on the teams above them in the table as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Bournemouth.

This was a meeting of two of the Premier League's form clubs, with only Chelsea and Manchester United having earned more points over their previous five league games.

But a wet encounter at the London Stadium was devoid of clear-cut chances until each team threw caution to the wind during the closing stages.

Callum Wilson, who scored a hat-trick at the Boleyn Ground to give Bournemouth their first Premier League win in August 2015, came off the bench for the Hammers and was soon denied by visiting goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.

Jarrod Bowen then went close to a stoppage-time winner for the hosts, while new signing Rayan clipped a post on the counter-attack for Bournemouth - but they could not avoid a sixth straight draw between the two sides.

Victory would have put West Ham level with Nottingham Forest, although the draw means they have managed to close the gap to two points, while Bournemouth have edged above Everton into eighth place.

West Ham analysis: Clean sheet the biggest positive

West Ham came into the game on their best run of form all season and almost took the lead inside the opening minute, with new loan signing Axel Disasi going close from a corner.

The Hammers finished with twice as many shots as Bournemouth (20-10), their most in a Premier League game this season, but only three were on target and they carried little threat beyond set-pieces.

After scoring six goals in his previous seven games, Crysencio Summerville was being watched by Netherlands assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy and he posed the biggest problems from open play, beating two men before testing Petrovic from distance in the first half.

Otherwise, the hosts did not begin to open up the Cherries until the latter stages, with Taty Castellanos flashing an overhead kick narrowly wide before Wilson came on with 18 minutes left to give the Hammers' new Argentina striker some company up front.

Wilson almost broke the deadlock moments later, only for Petrovic to claw out his touch at the near post, and Wilson finished with more touches in the opposition box than any other player (seven).

Summerville then found Bowen during the six minutes of added time and the England forward blazed over on the stretch.

So on the day the Hammers fans unveiled a tifo tribute to their former goalkeeper and coach Ludek Miklosko, who announced 14 months ago that he had withdrawn from cancer treatment, it was a clean sheet that provided the biggest positive.

Current keeper Mads Hermansen has kept two clean sheets in three Premier League games, as many as West Ham had in their previous 35, and they will be crucial in their bid to avoid relegation.

Bournemouth analysis: Cherries happy to play it safe

Iraola - 'you have to value the points' as Bournemouth draw to West Ham

Bournemouth are also on an impressive run, now seven unbeaten in the league, and were content to control possession throughout while threatening on the break.

With manager Andoni Iraola watching from the stands as he served a touchline ban, they offered little going forward in the first half.

Rayan and Alex Scott had tame long-range efforts before Rayan almost became the first teenager to register a goal involvement in each of their first four Premier League appearances.

The new signing broke forward just after the hour mark after a West Ham free-kick was cleared, running from his own half before his left-foot strike from the edge of the box glanced off the woodwork.

The 19-year-old Brazilian had another effort blocked having taken too long to get his shot away, while Marcos Senesi, Scott and Junior Kroupi tested Hermansen late on.

A late Bournemouth winner would have been harsh on the Hammers, and the Cherries will settle for a point, with two home games and a trip to second-bottom Burnley coming up.

What's next for these teams?

Bournemouth are at home to mid-table Sunderland next Saturday (12:30 GMT) while West Ham are away to the reigning champions Liverpool later that day (15:00).
