It seems fitting that the final FA Cup tie of the fourth round, delayed by more than a fortnight, left it impossibly late before sparking to life.

It's also ironic that the original tie was called off due to rain and was eventually settled by Waine.

Port Vale, bottom of League One, gritted their teeth, worked incredibly hard and saw-off toothless Championship play-off chasers Bristol City, 38 places above them in the ladder, with a goal eight minutes from the end of extra-time.

To call it a slow-burner would be an understatement, but it caught fire in the end, and boy did Bristol City and Gerhard Struber get burnt.

Instead of a League One trip to Peterborough, Vale now have the prospect of hosting Premier League Sunderland on Sunday lunchtime, on a pitch which will once again be a great leveller.

Port Vale matchwinner Ben Waine told BBC Sport: "That's unbelievable.

"It was a solid performance and we reduced them to minimal efforts on goal.

"My first chance probably goes in on a better pitch but the second one probably gets cleared off the line if it's a better pitch.

"It was pure relief when I saw it go in. It was amazing. It was special. Everyone worked their backsides off, to get that reward at the end is amazing."

After teeing up a date with Sunderland on Sunday, Waine added: "I'm a Newcastle fan so bring it on."

Ben Waine deserved to be the hero, he looked the most likely player on the pitch to break the deadlock, having a first-half shot blocked by Joe Lumley, and glancing two headers wide, while in the second half he was denied by Cam Pring in the goalmouth after nipping past Lumley,

In the end he got the goal that matters, driving onto Andre Gray's pass, skipping past the keeper and despite being off-balance hooking an angled left-foot shot back across goal which deceived three defenders and found the corner.

It was really, really bad.

An FA Cup tie, everything that it should have had, it didn't from a City point of view, there was no passion.

Port Vale wanted it more and City weren't good enough to break them down.

Blame the pitch, blame what you want but it was the same for both teams. Port Vale kept it simple, they chased down our forward players and in the end you have to say that they deserved it.

Total credit to all the Vale players. Vale had to stay in the game for long periods.

They pushed us back for long periods in the second half but they held on.

It's a collective spirit from the squad and they deserve to go through.

Port Vale are into the FA Cup fifth round for the first time in 30 years.

Ben Waine's goal, eight minutes from the end of extra-time, has written a new chapter in the grand old club's FA Cup story, and do you know what, they probably deserved it.

A dark night for Bristol City, toothless and dumped out by a team 38 places below them in the ladder, bottom of League One and with two home wins in the league all season.

The Robins were booed by their travelling fans at the final whistle while the home faithful launched into Glad All Over and Que Cera as the players conduct a lap f honour.

The Magic of the Cup took its time, but it has struck again tonight...

It might not be Wembley just yet, but Newcastle fan Waine has sealed a lunchtime date with Premier League Sunderland on Sunday (13:30 GMT).

I've just seen a replay of the goal and there's chances there for City to clear the ball.

Neto Borges lines up an ambitious 35-yard blast which cannons off a defender and pops up to Sam Bell in the box, who is penalised for handball by ref Elliot Bell.

Joe Gauci takes an age before taking the subsequent free-kick.

Bristol City now throwing everything forward but Joe Gauci takes command of his area to claim a ball in from the left.

The pace is frenetic and City looked ragged at the back so Vale might well find themselves another chance on the break yet too.

Vale have got to be careful, Bristol City are going to come at them now.

City win a free-kick in Scott Twine territory.

He's already been subbed so Tomi Horvat stapes up and curls a lovely left-footed effort from 25 yards which Joe Gauci does brilliantly to dive to his left and claim.

Andre Gray had more time, Vale had a two-on-one in midfield after Vale cleared the ball long from the back, but Gray's first-time pass to Ben Waine is short and allows the last-man to nip in and steal possession.

A better pass and Waine was through on goal.
