Aston Villa's Champions League hopes suffered another blow as Wolves clinched a stunning derby victory to avoid an unwanted record.

Joao Gomes and Rodrigo Gomes ensured the hosts reached 13 points to move past Derby's record Premier League low points total of 11 set in 2007-08.

They remain bottom and destined for relegation, but at least claimed a second top-flight win of the season.

Villa, who remain third, missed the chance to move six points clear of Manchester United in fourth and they have won just two of their past seven league games.

They were also knocked out of the FA Cup by Newcastle this month with Unai Emery's side faltering badly.

Villa had first-half chances when Pau Torres miscued a free header and Douglas Luiz volleyed straight at goalkeeper Jose Sa, while Toti Gomes scuffed wide for Wolves.

The hosts competed well and found the breakthrough when Joao Gomes scored with their first shot on target, firing in off the bar from Adam Armstrong's lay-off after 61 minutes.

Emery summoned Tammy Abraham from the bench with 20 minutes left but it made no difference as Rodrigo Gomes made it 2-0 in stoppage time.

Wolves analysis: Momentum building despite impending relegation

Edwards 'elated' with win as Wolves avoid unwanted points record

Boss Rob Edwards charged down the touchline to celebrate Wolves' last-gasp second goal which wrapped up a rare three points.

Rodrigo Gomes had finished Villa off with a goal on the break after the visitors pushed up in search of a late equaliser, sparking scenes of celebration hardly seen at Molineux this season.

It was just a second Premier League win of the campaign - but crucially means Wolves avoid being branded the worst team in the division's history.

There was a sense before the game Wolves were due a big win, and with stumbling Villa in town they could upset their neighbours.

They duly delivered in a unifying performance which gives more hope that the club will be able to recover from relegation quickly.

"One-nil to the Championship" sang the home fans after Joao Gomes' opening goal, with Wolves' gritty and determined performance delivering a deserved victory.

It will prolong the inevitable - Wolves are going down. But when Edwards replaced Vitor Pereira in November it was how they were going to get relegated - with a whimper or with fight.

In the final nine games of the season they have the chance to find the momentum to make an immediate return to the top flight.

Aston Villa analysis: Awful Villa now looking over their shoulders

Now is the moment to be together - Emery

The sight of Ezri Konsa rowing with the travelling Aston Villa fans underlined their current problems.

Frustration is boiling over with two wins from their past seven Premier League games derailing their quest to return to the Champions League.

Defeat at Wolves will go down as one of their worst performances under Emery.

They have the top four within their grasp and victory over Wolves - before hosting rivals Chelsea on Wednesday - would have edged them closer and kept the chasing pack at bay.

Instead, Manchester United will leapfrog them on goal difference if they beat Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday (14:00 GMT).

It is a worrying loss of form - sparked by the injuries to Boubacar Kamara, John McGinn and Youri Tielemans - and shows the lack of depth to Villa's squad.

The players were also clearly unhappy with each other, with Konsa and Amadou Onana gesturing to Emi Buendia to leave the pitch quicker when he was substituted.

Emery brought up his winless record at Molineux unprompted on Thursday, a sign it was irritating him, and he was clearly frustrated as he paced his technical area on Friday night.

He will now be fuming over the weekend as he watches powerless as their Champions League rivals try to close the gap.

What's next for these teams?

Wolves host Liverpool twice next week, in the Premier League on Tuesday (20:15 GMT), then the FA Cup fifth round on Friday (20:00).

Villa host Champions League rivals Chelsea on Wednesday (19:30), before travelling to Lille in the last 16 of the Europa League on 12 March (17:45).
