Forest fall to defeat against Brighton despite Gibbs-White stunner

Brighton immediately restore lead through Danny Welbeck
Danny Welbeck grabbed his 10th Premier League goal of the season as Brighton beat Nottingham Forest to claim back-to-back wins for the first time since November.
In a frantic start at Amex Stadium that saw three goals scored in the opening 15 minutes, Diego Gomez put Brighton ahead with an angled strike before Morgan Gibbs-White hammered in a leveller from the edge of the box.
But the hosts restored their lead just 105 seconds later through a clever turn and finish by Welbeck, who has now equalled his goal tally from last season.
The Seagulls set the tempo from there and should have scored more, while Forest struggled to break forward and create any meaningful chances in front of goal.
The visitors pushed for a late equaliser, but substitute Taiwo Awoniyi squandered their best opportunity when he sent a bullet header well wide of the target.
After ending their six-game winless run with victory at Brentford last week, it was another performance that will help to ease the pressure on manager Fabian Hurzeler as they move up to 11th - just three points behind eighth-placed Everton.
Vitor Pereira, meanwhile, is still searching for his first Premier League win as Forest boss, with Forest teetering two points above West Ham in the relegation zone.
Brighton analysis: Things looking up for Hurzeler
Hurzeler reacts to victory against Nottingham Forest
It was only a couple of weeks ago that boos and chants of "getting sacked in the morning" were being directed towards Hurzeler by a small section of Brighton fans.
But, as we all know, things can change very quickly in football.
Brighton had looked goal-shy during their six-game winless run, scoring just three times. In welcome contrast for their fans, they have now scored four in their last two.
And what will be even more promising for Hurzeler - though frustrating too - is that his side could have had more against Forest.
Kaoru Mitoma should have added another shortly after Welbeck netted Brighton's second, but he took a touch too many and his effort was smothered by Matz Sels – one of many times the keeper came to Forest's rescue.
A rapid reaction from the Belgian keeper denied Jack Hinshelwood's diving header just before the break, while he made a low dive to stop a Pascal Gross free-kick from curling in after the re-start.
Fortunately for Brighton, they were not left to rue the missed chances and in just two weeks they have managed to put significant distance between themselves and the danger zone. Ten points now separate them and 18th-placed West Ham.
Fans will also enjoy the welcome return of Solly March, who came on for James Milner in the 86th minute to make his first appearance since suffering a serious knee injury in April 2025.
Nottingham Forest analysis: Lack of goals hurting Pereira's side
Forest must focus on one game at a time - Pereira
It was just 13 months ago that an emphatic 7-0 victory over Brighton at the City Ground lifted Nottingham Forest up to third in the Premier League.
The club find themselves in a very different place now.
Forest have sacked three managers since then and are in a relegation fight, while finding the back of the net has become a major problem.
Pereira got Wolves out of a sticky situation last season, but he will need to get his team firing in front of goal if they are to survive this season.
Only bottom side Wolves (15) have failed to score in more Premier League games this term than the Tricky Trees (13).
Gibbs-White was Forest's only true threat on the south coast, but he was unable to find a second late in the second half when his header - the visitor's best chance since his 13th-minute equaliser - was easily collected by Bart Verbruggen.
Igor Jesus, meanwhile, has not been able to replicate his Europa League form in the Premier League - scoring just twice compared to seven times in Europe.
Pereira will be hopeful that an imminent return for Chris Wood, who scored 20 league goals last season but has been out injured since October, is on the cards for Forest as they approach the back end of the season.
What next for these teams?
Brighton host league leaders Arsenal on Wednesday, 4 March at 19:30 GMT, while Nottingham Forest are in action at second-placed Manchester City at the same time.
