Newport County made it two wins out of two at home as they beat Chesterfield 2-1 to boost their chances of League Two survival.

January loan signing Harrison Biggins opened the scoring for the hosts after the break with his first goal for the Welsh club from a corner.

Michael Spellman doubled County's lead with his third league goal of the season to put the Exiles in a commanding position for the last 30 minutes.

Chesterfield were unbeaten across their last seven away league games before their trip to Rodney Parade.

It looked like they could keep their record intact when Dilan Markanday brought one back for the visitors in the 85th minute to setup a nervy finish for Newport.

County held on, surviving eight additional minutes of stoppage time to clinch a vital three points in their quest for League Two survival.

Sammy Braybrooke - who spent the first half of the season with Newport before joining Chesterfield on loan from Leicester City - could not come back to haunt his former club.

Christian Fuchs' side have closed the gap to one point between them and Bristol Rovers after their relegation rivals were beaten 1-0 by Salford City.
