When could Wolves be relegated?

Wolverhampton Wanderers could be relegated as early as 22 March from the Premier League following a forgettable campaign.

Rob Edwards' side are currently bottom of the table having picked up just 13 points from 29 matches, leaving them 14 points from safety and having played one match more than every other team in the bottom six.

Wolves can only reach a maximum of 40 points this season, and that would require the Molineux men winning each of their final nine matches.

Given Wolves have only won twice in the top-flight this campaign, that would appear highly unlikely.

Their next two league games see them face defending champions Liverpool before a trip to Brentford.

Should Wolves lose both those games against sides vying for European football next term, the maximum points they can achieve is 34.

Theoretically, they would therefore be relegated if Leeds pick up four points, Tottenham win their next two matches, and Forest win their next three, with the weekend between March 20 and 22 not including a Wolves Premier League fixture due to the EFL Cup final.

Should that happen, Wolves would be relegated with six matches remaining, and break the Premier League record for the earliest a team has been relegated in terms of dates.

But with Forest facing a tricky away trip to Manchester City and a home fixture against Fulham, before a potential relegation six-pointer against Spurs, that may not happen in such a quick timeframe.

Derby County currently hold the unfortunate record after Paul Jewell's side were relegated on 29 March 2008.

It was a season to forget for the Rams after recording the lowest points tally ever seen in the league (11).

Derby scored just 20 goals that campaign and conceded 89, winning just one game.

Last season Southampton suffered the earliest Premier League relegation in terms of the number of games played. Ivan Juric's side went down with seven games left to play and finished on a meagre 12 points.

These are the records Wolves are looking to avoid:

  • Derby County (2007-08): 29 March

  • Huddersfield Town (2018-19): 30 March

  • Fulham (2018-19): 2 April

  • Leicester City (2001-02): 6 April

  • Southampton (2024-25): 6 April

  • Portsmouth (2009-10): 10 April

  • Sunderland (2002-03): 12 April

  • Leicester City (1994-95): 13 April

  • Ipswich Town (1994-95): 14 April

  • Sunderland (2005-06): 14 April
